Trump Bombs Iran, Hegseth Bombs Reality, and We’re All Supposed to Pretend It Worked

Folks, this episode had everything: rage, receipts, and some of the smartest damn guests you’ll find anywhere in the known universe. We opened the show with Emmy-winning anchor and my co-host in righteous fury, David Schuster, who wasted no time tearing into Trump’s unhinged Pentagon pick—also suspected to be the first 5th of whiskey to embrace human form, Pete Hegseth.

David was once a Pentagon correspondent, so when he says a Defense Secretary is off the rails, trust me—he knows. Hegseth went on a press conference tirade so wild, it was like if Cujo were given some mix of Concerta and Benzene. He screamed at reporters, smeared Jennifer Griffin for asking a question, and called the Iran strike the most successful military op in U.S. history. Regarding that las bit of preposterousness, I’m surprised “D-Day” didn’t jump up to kick him in the nuts just based on principle.

Alison Gill, aka Mueller, She Wrote, was scheduled to join us at the start, but got delayed live-tweeting a federal hearing involving Kilmar Abrego Garcia—an increasingly important case in our chaotic, Trump-pooched legal landscape. She and her brilliant insights were right there by mid-show, though.

And early on we had backup from the bullpen: Mike Nellis, one of the sharpest Democratic strategists in the game (and a former poker shark, no less), who originally was gonna join in the middle. Mike jumped on relatively early and delivered hammer blows. He called Hegseth a sad man projecting strength through assholery—and folks, he’s not wrong. He’s so very far from wrong.

Mike broke down why Trump’s military cosplay is failing miserably with the American people. And how the White House is trying to con the country with a fake victory narrative in Iran (much released via Tweet, which is so inane)—our “bunker-busters” didn’t bust very much, it turns out—while families are still struggling to buy eggs. So we must, as Cliff said, create a narrative about who they are. He likes Cruel, Corrupt & Incompetent. It doesn’t have to be that, but must be something memorable that encapsulates all their awful.

We also got real about messaging: what Democrats must do now, how to seize issues like housing and immigration, and why GDP stats aren’t enough—we’ve got to speak to what people feel at the kitchen table. Mike and David didn’t just analyze, they gave our viewers real tools to talk to friends, family, even that cousin who still claim Trump Steaks weren’t garbage.

So the good news is the American people aren’t buying Trump’s bull anymore—not on Iran, not on the economy, and sure as hell not on masked, unidentified, but very angry ICE agents yanking people off streets like we’re in some dystopian reboot of The Handmaid’s Tale. Even many of his own aren’t accepting his bullshit anymore.
