How long before the billionaire tech class just shuts down the internet to silence everyone not spouting their propaganda? This crisis is dire. The corporate takeover of the “independent free press” in this country, is by far the most consequential event that allowed this takeover by authoritarianism. Our elected officials have surrendered us to this fate. They saw this coming and did nothing when holding power 12 years of the past 17. This is unforgivable.
I couldn’t agree more, Al. Ds passed some great legislation, but as I said in the piece, they never could grasp they needed to build new institutions, reform others and flat out get aggressive to protect democracy, getting rid of crap that exists nowhere in the constitution like the filibuster. But they could never do it. And that’s a big reason we’re here
It's depressing, Cliff. If Sinema and Manchin had stood up for the people, and not the corporate lobbies that pay them off, the filibuster would have been derailed to at least get voting rights protected. Voting rights is key to being able to fix the rest of the broken system. As long as vote suppression, and gerrymandering are allowed to enable minority rule, along with the electoral college, there is no real hope for meaningful change to any of the institutions that need reform. The media environment we exist in is quickly becoming a means of normalizing corruption, and stoking despair and hopelessness among the people. If people don't think change is possible, they will never do the work to bring it about. I fear the dystopian future my grandchildren will have to endure because leaders of my generation failed the test. I hope this platform can survive the targeting that is sure to come. Thank you for bringing discussion of these issues to an open forum!
