ICE is not redeemable. It is evil from the leaders to the agents. Shut it down.

It is fantasy to believe you can reform a brutal, lawless, paramilitary organization whose mandate is to oppress the public and serve the dictatorial whims of the administration. DHS, CBP and ICE need to be dismantled and rebuilt from the ground up. Dems in Congress who think otherwise are either completely out of touch with public sentiment or intentionally collaborating with the regime for personal reasons.

There is, in fact, a third possibility: that Dems in Congress believe the demands they made were the absolute best they could hope for right now. The scary thing is, that might be correct.

Brian's avatar

If it's correct it's because the Republicans have already convinced everybody so they won't try. People are ready to fight, and bring the house down. Maybe replacing Democrats as well as the festering trump loyalists is the way to go.

Victoria Pawlick's avatar

That is indeed a possibility. However, if you go into a negotiation asking for half of what you want, knowing you will get half of that which you asked for, you end up with bupkus.

DHS was hurriedly formed after 9/11 but I don’t believe it was in a panic. It seemed to me that Bush and, possibly primarily, Cheney, saw an opportunity to consolidate power by relieving us of constitutional rights. I asked people at the time if they didn’t think that throwing away rights might be more dangerous than what we were facing from outside threats. They told me that they felt safer with the new restrictions imposed. And thus the foundation was laid for what we are suffering through now.

This is a clear, excellent explanation why the Democratic Party is so unpopular right now. We are left to make a choice between a party of wet noodle, spineless wimps and a party of heartless criminals which is presently in control of the administration, Congress, and the Supreme Court. We need the Dems to step up and preserve our democracy, and if they do not our future generations are doomed to the whims of the thieves who are looting our country as we speak.

I am beyond disgusted with Schumer and Jeffries. Both lack the backbones to stand up to Trump and MAGA against ICE. These thugs were hired because of their propensities of violence and horrific deeds. These ICE agents ,I firmly believe. are from Trump’s pardoned J6 criminals, Proud Boys, and the lowest of the low! ICE needs to be abolished. Reconstruction from the ground up. And you are so right, ICE is too corrupt to be rehabilitated. It’s rotten through and through.

Also Oath Keeper, and KKK.

As long as Trump, his team, the bootlickers in Congress, and the entire amoral system has power, evil will continue to advance. This will take years to back off from, starting with a Democrat sweep of the midterms, followed by accountability for the Trump regime's corruption and crimes, starting with impeachment and removal of Trump.

Dismantle DHS. Get rid of ICE.

I consider the Democratic ask utterly insufficient. We need to address the horrors that go on in ICE holding facilities and apply Bivens to Federal police forces to make them liable for their actions. There also need to be consequences that address failures to abide by laws, and court orders. I would vote for requiring the release of 100 detainees for every failure to get a judicial warrant, or to ignore a court order. The enforcement is the difficult part. I'm beginning to wonder if things have already gone too far to pull things back. I also have to wonder where Shumer and Jeffries get their news. Are the unaware of the true horrors, not just the ones main stream TV chooses to cover?

Band of feckless Dems just don’t get it.

The time for defunding is long, long gone.

Now the watchword should be disbanding—once and for all.

Well said. Reform is not enough. The Democrats need to stop with the strongly worded letters. Hand wringing isn't going to do anything. Refund ICE and DHS. Yes!!

Agree @David Shuster .

I told my Senator Eliz Warren no money for ICE/DHS or she would lose her job. A few days later she took a break from her area - the money shenanigans of elites and banks and all and drew a line regarding that funding.

Call it works even with Dems.

There is not enough courage in the ranks of the Democrats leadership to do what needs to be done. It will be up to the people, and if successful, there will be changes made.

Hope Crescione's avatar

They need to stop bending the knee to their big donors.

CLS's avatar

Amen to all that... and I have to add, the only thing more depressing than the Dem's tepid demands is the R's response that they are radical, extreme, left-wing demands that will never be considered by R lawmakers. Period. So -- what do we do now?
