But let’s look at this Epstein calculus for a moment. What do we actually KNOW?
Well, we KNOW that Trump appears in that collection of documents. That much has already come out in the stuff we’ve seen.
We also KNOW that Trump doesn’t want these files released.
And finally we KNOW that Congressional Republicans are getting antsy enough to start inching away from Trump (some faster than others).
So WHY Trump doesn't want those files released, is not something we KNOW. But we can probably narrow it down a bit.
(a) he knows there’s incriminating evidence that implicates him in the files.
and/or
(b) he knows there’s incriminating evidence that implicates SOMEBODY ELSE that he fears more than he fears accountability for how he’s handling this issue.
Either is disturbing, but for my money (b) is the one that is actually worrying. If he’s implicated it’ll come out and we’ll deal with it (or not) and lots of yelling on both sides but we expect this. But if he’s actually protecting somebody ELSE? You have to wonder WHO he’s afraid of that (a) would be implicated in the Epstein Files™ and (b) scares Fat Donny that much.
What’s “amusing”, if anything in this whole sordid business qualifies as “amusing”, it’s watching Congressional Republicans trying to triangulate how to navigate this shitstorm. “Do I want to be included in the Pedo Protection Program? or is it safer to piss off Trump?” Can you imagine being so beholden to Trump that you have to perform this kind of calculus? I think MTG figured out a while back that Tangerine Cthulhu is about to be radioactive, and the time to reach minimum safe distance is NOW. The other three that signed onto the discharge petition I’m less sure about (except Mace, who I figure may actually be triggered by this business and it’s a red line she won’t cross).
What’s certain? Things are going to get really interesting in the next 7-10 days.
It’s all so disturbing. ICE (and maybe kidnappers) snatching people, taking them to who knows where. Callously cutting off vital services for everyday kids, parents, elderly, vets, under-resourced folks, disabled/special needs communities. Disrespect. Threats. Violence. I will never forgive those formerly sane people in Congress who now have promoted this evilness and hatred, who either look the other way or celebrate. I hope America can finally take down Trump and give him a jumpsuit that is matchy-matchy with his tanning spray.
Sherrill gets it on a couple of levels. First, you gotta meet people where they ARE, not where you want them to be. And second — and infinitely more important — when you’re presenting yourself as trying to help a group of people, MAYBE you want to include a few of them in your focus group, yeah? Just because SNAP recipients are poor does NOT mean they don’t have agency. And they KNEW what they were signing on for, but it was important enough to THEM that they were willing to make the sacrifice. And they’re P-I-S-S-E-D, and rightly so.
