Not being a journalist, I wasn't aware of the possible legal implications of receiving unredacted material. It blows my mind that people could be so evil as to not only abuse young boys and girls, but weaponize that against those trying to serve justice.
I get nervous when handling these files...and just some practical steps we should all be taking (if possible):
1. ALWAYS use a VPN when connecting to the DOJ site. Otherwise, they will get your IP Address, and know who is accessing the files - both to the site, and also if any actions like DL'ing are taking place (And use a trusted VPN, and not one of the "free" ones as those providers sell your data)
2. If you can, when downloading the files - please make sure to use an antivirus / malware app to see if ANY of the files are infected with trojan spyware, etc.
3. I would suggest you use a virtual server if at all possible - VMWARE / PARALLELS (on Mac) to make sure the files are isolated from anything on your main desktop. That way, even IF something happens - the files are isolated and cannot infect your main desktop, etc.
The material deserves to be handled with extreme care and as Ellie says, the DOJ and others are watching who is downloading and writing about these files.
I just vetted NordVPN and subscribed. r/VPN on Reddit has a spreadsheet pinned that evaluates various offerings. There was a decent discount for a 2 year NordVPN subscription and they are considered one of the best options. They don't log your data so they would have nothing to turn over if subpoenaed. Ensure they know 1) the risks and 2) all the steps they need to take to protect themselves. The discourse of “citizen journalism” is growing. But this is the very first time I have seen anything about the risk of becoming involved. 💗 love the work you are doing.

Now Ellie is calling it out for what it is: THEY HAVE WEAPONIZED WHAT WAS MEANT TO BE TOOLS OF DEFENSE. We who vote need this information to rid ourselves of all the rubbish in Congress. They are not there for our interests but their own. The good guys in both parties are fighting for us in an uphill battle. We citizens need to bolster them and let these wicked men and/or women know we've had enough.

Why we need to be careful when downloading & handling this material...almost guaranteed the DOJ kept some of the files unredacted for 2 reasons:
1) Intimidate any survivors that might be thinking of going public now
2) Intentionally getting a knock on your door from the FBI for even possessing that material irrespective of you having viewed it or not
Scary times...but it's expected when it's a coverup of this scale.
