This really started during Covid. It’s already a mess.
My own doctors independently decided that it was more financially successful to become concierge physicians. For several years now, I’ve not been able to find competent medical professionals in my rural NY area.
Of course, for now I still have health insurance. But so many do not, will not.
What a sad state of affairs. Death everywhere while the wealthy get rewarded by the pain.
Robin D, I’m just two hours north from you. I’m sorry “the city”, as we refer to Manhattan here, is facing the same drought of heath care professionals. Our health care situation is terrible. And about to get even worse!
I know, and it’s an awful situation. I have several friends who live in different areas “upstate” . One friend who is two hours away and moved during covid kept his two most important doctors (specialists…not even PCP) here in the city because he could not find any where he is. Definitely what I would call “rural” because he has to drive 20 minutes just to get milk. It takes him two hours by Amtrak to get to the city but he must. He has major health issues. Even hospitals are far. Some are not as far north and not as “rural”, but have problems finding Medicare providers. It’s one of the reasons I never moved. 🙏
One nightmare scenario is that we are hit with another viral pandemic for which, thanks to Trump and RFK2 et al, we will be seriously unprepared. The system survived covid though the post-pandemic damage is still there. Another big shock like covid could be devastating.
I often have fancied that we should put the entire federal budget under the Defense Department in order to get more funding for the things we non-defense contractors need. If nobody bats an eye at $600 coffee makers for the Pentagon, maybe nobody will object to a child getting $60/month in WIC benefits. After all, what is DOD defending but our way of life?

Sorry to say but that’s happened just about in every community.
That’s my point although I used my own personal experience, it’s nationwide.
Here in NYC too. Almost all PCPs are concierge now, outrageously expensive, and many doctors are dropping Medicare too.

Our military “leaders” scour terrain, weather, flight patterns, and likely adversaries.
We scour lists of “in network” physicians medical deductibles and copayments, and pre-existing conditions.
Hey, I’ve been sitting in this damn waiting room for nearly an hour.
Where’s my doctor?
When patients can't source their medications and the pentagon is spending $15 million on ribeye steaks, trust dissolves like candy floss.
