What goes up, will come down. The next Democratic President should announce at his/her inauguration speech that at 8:00 the next morning the DT tacky, unapproved eyesore will begin to be torn down and the East wing will be restored.

DT will be personally sued for all of the cost since this desecration (disrespect of something sacred) to the Peoples House is not within his Presidential duties.

Any company involved with the destruction of the East Wing or building the new DT monstrosity will not be allowed to bid on the new work. If the owners of those companies were true American Patriots they would have refused to participate in this horror.

Vote Blue. Help erase any vestige of DT's assault on our country... GH

Fred and Ginger were gracefully “dancing in the dark” in their wistful musical routines.

In their own tone deaf way, Trump’s architects of desecration are also dancing in the dark.

They would do well to sit this one out.

the cost has already soared to 300M…and IMHO it will be much more…OF OUR TAX MONEY. WHEN WILL THE GOP STAND UP? He will get rid of them when he’s done using them. They are useful IDIOTS.

Came here to point out this exact thing. And don’t believe for a minute that it’s not headed north of that.

It's not our tax money, which makes it even worse. It's billionaire influence-buying money. The joke is they will lose all that influence with the next Democratic president and he can't take the ballroom with him. I don't know about restoring the East Wing, but they could certainly repurpose this building for a higher good. A lot of gold will have to be removed to make it bearable though.

It’s not gold but gold plated junk.

The NRSC should go to vote for an injunction to stop the demolition. They didn’t approve the demolition.

Then rump should be sent a bill for the destruction of a national landmark.

I’m so tired of being told that I didn’t see what I saw with my own eyes (eg Jan 6) and didn’t hear what I heard with my own ears (eg virtually every word coming out of Trump’s mouth). EVERY AMERICAN CAN SEE what’s being done to the East Wing. Why isn’t every American outraged? THIS IS OUR WHITE HOUSE! This isn’t a home improvement project, it’s an affront to every one of us, including the Black Americans who are descendants of those who built the White House. Wake up, America!

Instead of a planned destruction of Trump's ballsy room, how about preventing it's construction!?

Can't SOMEONE place a hold on this insult to an historic and beloved national treasure?

WHAT LEGAL RECOURSE IS BEING PURSUED? I WANT TO KNOW HOW TO STOP THE BUILDING OF THE BALLROOM. TRUMP MAY LIVE IN THE WHITEHOUSE, BUT IT IS NOT HIS TO RIP APART. OUR GOVERNMENT IS, AT LEAST IN LAW, MORE THAN ONE MAN.

Confidence turns to pride, which turns to arrogance, which turns to hubris. Then you get monstrosities like this--a cathedral dedicated to the power of wealth, dwarfing the edifice to which it is anomalously attached, the house designated for the use of our nation's top public servant.

If a Democratic president had even mentioned the possibility of doing this, he'd have been impeached the next day. And then entire media system would be blasting this 24/7 and on their front pages, supporting his removal. I don't want to hear anymore about how everything Trump does is so outrageous we can't be outraged. This is a step too far—the sheer arrogance of its confiscation of a publicly owned symbol of democracy to install a symbol of corruption and greed, without following any of the legally required steps should be enough to boot Trump from office.

The private funding aspect is interesting. OK, so these billionaires funding it are trying to purchase favor with Trump. But what happens afterwards? He can't take it with him as if it were a Qatari jet. Won't the billionaires have basically lost everything they put in if a Democratic president, for instance, decides to eliminate the interior ballroom and repurpose the building as a public visitor historical center? This whole thing is so fucked beyond belief. I know they won't do anything but I've contacted my Senators, Useless and Moron-o, to demand they stop this.

And don't get me started on the Marcos-like corruption of demanding that $230 mil of taxpayer dollars be put directly in his bank account because his fee fees were hurt by a normal and legitimate political process.

The headline about Trump wanting to waltz in his own ballroom is rather off. Trump is not capable of waltzing. The waltz is a demanding dance, requiring physical coordination, spatial awareness, and feeling for 3/4 time music. He is too stupid to waltz.

I find this move by Trump nauseating and of course an affront to the law which he no regard. The demolition is another testament to his con man lying character as he demolishes history, civil rights, disregards the law and protocols, build monuments to himself, pardons criminals and felons that he likes because they are republican, and posts video of him shitting on the American People and free speech. The optics cannot be dismissed and this crude adn craven man need to be held accountable and impeached and face all the illegal, criminal and weird words uttered and actions of gross indecency, lawlessness, crudeness and disrespect for this country. He is using his position to execute revenge on his perceived critics and "enemies" and uses the presidency as his personal cash machine. He is a grifter and a con man and heavy with fakery and trumpery. What he just doing to the White House, the Peoples House is garish and tacky just like him and a symbol of his reckless and benign presidency. I give no consent and call for trump to be totally investigated, and the release the Epstein file. He claims he is the greatest president in History as he boasts and lies. If this were a democratic president engaged is such behaviors adn utterances, he would have been impeach long ago and arrested. No one is above the law , even Trump but unfortunately he has placed in the courts his loyalists who bend the law or ignore the constitution to suit Trump and keep him from facing justice and accountability. This must not stand in perpetuity, but should be overturned through judicial legislative process. Unfortunately the legislature is full of those who excuse and have pledged complete fealty to Trump, he has a cast of enablers and those who lie just like him. The truth will come out at some point and will prevail as will our democracy but we will have a great deal of clean up and healing to do and this must be across the board and we must somehow elicit out former republicans and regular people to join the effort to make America Democratic again and free for all who desire to be apart of our ongoing experiment. We cannot do this in isolation of each other, a reality that Trump has created and incited: American against AMERICAN, THIS MUST STOP AS WELL. We must rise to our better selves and come to the table and hammer out our differences, find of commonalities and lay plans for a time after Trump and a renewed dream. May light shine forth and God bless America.

I've heard it referred to as "the Epstein Ballroom" - think that's what it should be called until it too is torn down.

Excellent article! I'd only add to it with my own suspicions that 1) he's installing spying infrastructure for himself, crime family and his allies globally, and 2) he's skimming the costs for himself like he's been doing in building the for-profit prisons allover our country and internationally. He and the other 'investors 'need heads to fill the prisons so he/they can forever bleed our government to pay for each stolen person!

3) We know he's a felon, rapist, traitor, treasonous insurrectionist and domestic terrorist, an international mobster in bed for decades with our enemies and simply; a criminally insane deviant. All things considered, Trump was very likely Epstein’s partner for decades in global and domestic blackmailing. Blackmailing would explain his above the law fearlessness he has about literally anything and everything. The SCOTUS bending to his outright lawlessness has enabled all of what we're seeing today. They, like a lot of both Republicans and top corporate heads etc. are likely in those Trump/Epstein/Maxwell files. They're not going to relesse them at any cost. People involved should consider leaking them. These blackmailed pedophiles are literally watching our country and democracy being completely destroyed, and they will not lift a finger because of Trump’s ( likely Putin's, Saudis and Netanyahu) blackmailing them with outings. They'd rather see us gone and sold out then be exposed.

Considering the amounts of money that Trump's oligarchs can afford to donate to the ballroom, it seems to me that they really don't need a new permanent tax break.

Someone posted a map of the White House and the information that the East Wing was constructed with a bunker underneath. Beyond his love of the garish, Trump is terrified of war. Could the reason he has not sent the weapons to Ukraine that they have asked for be because Putin has threatened nuclear retaliation? Could the ornate ballroom be a distraction from the massive bunker being built below? Is that why they don't want pictures taken?
