In a recent New York Times podcast interview, billionaire technocrat Peter Thiel pulled back the curtain—just a little bit—on the ideology that has guided his decades-long mission (some might say obsession) to reshape American power.
What Thiel revealed in this interview didn’t resemble a vision of progress. It was a peek inside the heart of darkness, moral decay and a blueprint for authoritarian control.
Thiel, the gay Silicon Valley billionaire who has backed Donald Trump since 2016, dismissed democracy as inefficient. He also questioned whether “too much participation” in our democracy has slowed America down. He openly fantasized about a post-liberal world governed by elite, centralized forces.
Thiel believes in acceleration. Not just of technology, but of upheaval. Collapse. Of a civilization and democracy so paralyzed by complexity that it must be reset by something stronger—smarter, harder, colder. Something more “rational.”
This “rational” ideology—which has a cult-like devotion among its followers—is called accelerationism. It un-ironically borrows from Karl Marx, and is shared by white supremacist groups who lead terror attacks against modern society to *hasten acceleration* of its fall.
In Thiel’s interview, he didn't call for violence or fascism—but he didn’t need to. It was as clear as day, and as serious as a heart attack. Thiel believes that “smarter, harder, colder, more rational” government can be provided by…him.
And people just like him.
Which is to say tech bros like Elon Musk, also an adherent of accelerationism. This is exactly what DOGE was about, destruction of government as an accelerant, because the system must go down. It wasn’t about “reforming” anything. That was the usual PR ruse that they needed to put their kooky ideas into practice.

Accelerationist groups share several core beliefs:
The Inevitability of Collapse: Accelerationists assert that modern societies are inherently unstable, and any attempt to preserve the current order is futile.
Use of Violence as a Catalyst: The right-wing accelerationist movement, in particular, advocates for violence as a means of accelerating collapse, often targeting government institutions, law enforcement, and other societal symbols.
Anonymity and Digital Organization: Many accelerationist groups operate primarily online, using encrypted platforms and social media to recruit, spread propaganda, and coordinate activities.
Apocalyptic Ideals: They envision a post-collapse world where their ideals can thrive, often glorifying a new society free of perceived impurities or constraints.
The real danger is that wealthy, tech proponents of accelerationism give it a patina of near-respectability that The Turner Diaries crowd never could. Just like with Trump, our corporate media is fine calling out klansmen, but the guys who go to the same restaurants, vacation spots, and art-gallery openings? Not a chance.
So what does accelerationism really end up looking like? Well, a lot like authoritarianism with a Silicon Valley smile…

And when you cut through the silly techno-babble about efficiency and simplicity, it really just comes down to this line by Emperor Palpatine in The Phantom Menace:
The Republic is not what it once was. The Senate is full of greedy, squabbling delegates.
The complexity of debate, slow movement demanded by the separation of powers, and differing opinions, all let Palpatine claim that debate and democracy were weaknesses. Moving quickly, coldly, and forcefully, based on the opinions of a few or one man (always men), would make “the republic” strong.
There’s a name for that, but it isn’t “the republic.”
Getting back to Thiel, the problem is these aren’t just the musings of a random schmuck. Thiel has enormous resources at his disposal and uses them to fund candidates. Musk and other allies, such as David Sacks, have joined him in the endeavor (what a coincidence, all three hail—or is it “heil?”—from apartheid-era South Africa).
Their wealth and reach means they can be a uniquely destabilizing force on a global scale.
Thiel’s already saddled us with J.D. Vance. He nearly did the same with Blake Masters, and he has more tech-bro-autocrat-bots on the way. He also bankrolls media empires. He invests in surveillance, biotech, and AI systems that aim to replace public institutions—and dutifully suck up all our data.
He’s a kingmaker for a future where elections, regulations, and even dissent are viewed as the outdated bugs of an old operating system. Freedoms and democracy are dial-up Internet. And Thiel is leading the fight against remaining opposition to his ideology within the GOP.
This isn’t science fiction. It’s the next version of America—unless we stop it.
