By their votes or failure to vote, the American people did this. Those two groups own it. Those who did all we could to avoid that outcome (which does not, it seems, include President Biden or the leadership of the Democratic party) do not. He is not "our" President. He is the leader of a toxic segment of our population unworthy of the sacrifices of those whom Memorial Day honors, my late father, his two brothers, and my father-in-law among them.

Whether we can or will recover from this horrific attack on everything good about this country is uncertain at best, but I think unlikely. The damage is already severe, and some of it will prove irreversible, especially the loss of trust in our nation's word, which can clearly be broken at whim by a fickle electorate and a demagogic narcissist.
