It appears we can no longer rely on the military leadership to adhere to a code of conduct nor an oath to the Constitution. We are in treacherous waters here.

This incident is not a good representation of the larger military leadership. The challenge is making sure this piece of leadership is called out and recognized for their behaviors, and that empowers the other leaders that would have pushed back to be the ones to push back in the future. Don’t write off the military because of an incident.

It’s not just the crime, it is the cover up.

Jeanne Elbe's avatar

Indeed. The cover up got Nixon . I pray it gets the gang.

Rob's avatar

Those bastards! Kegsbreath and all in the chain of command below must face the consequences for their crimes and the cover-up!

Jeanne Elbe's avatar

We mustn’t leave out the Commander in Chief.

Kegsbreath fired a bunch of JAG officers and these are who tell commanders if an action is legal . Must have been a JAG who went along OR they did not consult a JAG which sounds like this crew.

JFC - Jesus Fucking Christ! Or; what would sweet Jesus do? Or; kill them all; let dad sort 'em out! JFC!

As when Thomas Crook's body was cremated just 10 days after the assassination attempt on trump, BEFORE an independent examination could be conducted and without informing congressional investigators or local law enforcement/coroner officials. Ignoring judges orders, subpoenas, on & on, the lawlessness in this administration is mind-boggling, Nixon's was exemplary by comparison.

This is illegal and un-American.

I am 81 and no longer recognize my country. I was born and raised here. My father was born here into a third generation of American citizens. He enlisted to fight in WW2 received a Purple Heart for being wounded in battle. My grand nephew enlisted after 9/11. We are the citizens Trump calls losers for signing up to fight. Now President Bone Spurs is showing the world how shameful we have become!

I am ashamed to be an American today.

Rules of engagement distinguish the disciplined military of a civilized society from the ruthless hordes of a barbarian culture. When Lethal Pete harangued military leaders that they were to no longer follow rules of engagement, every fire alarm in the Pentagon should have gone off.

We have never had anything like this before. Where are the Brass that, like all military people, took an oath to defend the constitution!

John Brobst's avatar

I want to thank all of you that responded to my message. I was an Army guy & we must United before it is too late.

John Brobst's avatar

Resignation is NOT the answer, we need the Brass to UNITE and refuse to carry out orders that they know violate the constitution!

A rogue Commander in Chief has now resulted in a rogue military.

The behavior of the brass in this situation has me questioning what we have been told about our military. It is supposedly the best trained, best armed force in the world, with an officer core that exhibits the highest order of professionalism.

ANY officer confronted with an order that is patently against regulations, and hence illegal has a duty to refuse carrying out that order.

If a military person is unwilling to risk his rank, or even his career, in a situation like this, then how can he be expected to face privation and the threat of eminent extinction in battle? I have seen warriors who have been exposed to combat get elected to represent their people in Congress and then completely fold when far less existential threats are used against them.

Is there any research that helps explain this conundrum?

But when T says he wants to “m A g a” he means move us back to the late 19th century when US troops massacred Indigenous peoples, the KKK fought immigration from “unassimilable” places like Sicily and Greece and Serbia, and Woodrow Wilson imposed Jim Crow segregation on DC. We lived and fought disreputably before, but that is no warrant for returning to the worst practices of our past.

Well- documented article! Every day it is a new horror from this corrupt administration. No wonder we have so many bombings and shootings. Everyone is tipping over the edge from frustration and anxiety!

And very lax gun laws.

Transparency is the antidote to corruption. Transparency is the vehicle to accountability.

Excerpt “

Remove transparency, and the foundation of an unbiased, apolitical standing armed forces crumbles beneath our feet, and we are left with a rogue military serving men and agendas instead of the citizenry as a whole. And that is the most ominous threat imaginable.

Thank you, sir. This piece is exquisitely laid out, plain as day, clear, and the words I quote above, what you write at your conclusion, resonate deeply, and should be broadcast loudly across the countryside, like the loud bells of Sunday morning or that of a temple… For all to know. Thank you for your clarity and character.

“Following orders” is a defense that easily moves inhumane and barbaric behavior to a questionable realm.

John Brobst's avatar

A questionable realm that a democracy cannot tolerated!

This is terrible as our US Navy participated in this cover up & glad my Dad can’t see it as he devoted 29 years of his life to the Navy. I’m sure other families feel the same. It’s not right people. Injustices are are being performed & getting away with it.

Excellent article. I don't trust Hegseth or his loyalists at all. Investigations must occur.

Robert Parke's avatar

Who and how many can be prosecuted for these obvious crimes committed against our Constitution and moral values.

John Griessen's avatar

Another step downward... I need to send more postcards to reps and senators. 17 senate votes and 76 house votes from republicans and the evil ones are out.

Liz Locke's avatar

The fact that Hegseth revealed his contempt for refusing illegal orders and for leashing our forces against indiscriminate murder in the book he published means that his nomination to head the DoD should have been moot from the start. Give a monster a gun (or a nuclear weapon) and only the monstrous will ensue. We are there now.

This is a great article - thank you.

Back in 2001-02, I was working for the Center for Constitutional Rights when the first bound and goggled Afghans began to arrive at Gitmo. I remember the long period (I was young) when it wasn't clear what the legal basis was supposed to be for their detention, and the dilemma for the Administration, which knew that POW status would shut down interrogations, but denying POW status would endanger the ability to hold them. "Unlawful combatant" was announced as a way to make sure they fell through the cracks in the law.
