I was born in 1951. I remember the aftermath of McCarthyism, and when I was old enough to understand, I knew that was bad. Then I lived through Nixon, and I thought THAT was bad! ALL of that is dwarfed by this criminal-ridden, bigoted, misogynistic, unqualified administration, and those who have bowed own to it...like the Supreme Court. Aren't oaths of office to our Constitution, country, and citizens sacred anymore? I fear for our future generations.
Humanity is its own worst enemy. These people in charge are the result of condoning bad behavior. Our President is the number one example of that. Our Supreme Court Republican Justices have lost their way and are responsible for much of this mess that we are suffering today. As a 72 yr old, I believe the biggest negative impact on our society happened in the 1980s when Ronald Reagan introduced Trickle Down Economics. And then when the Supreme Court passed the bill, Citizens United. We’ve been on a downward spiral ever since.
Yes, the transfer of wealth as a result of tax policies since the 1980’s and the influence of that wealth in politics exacerbated by Citizens United decision, along with, I would argue, the loss of journalistic standards, in part due to the ownership of media by billionaires like Rupert Murdoch. It happened over the last 50 years, almost imperceptibly. The rise of Christian nationalism in the Republican Party (which I would say also started with Reagan and was cemented in place with the younger Bush) and their use of an anti-abortion crusade as a litmus test for republican nominees in general and nominees to the Supreme Court specifically became a defining feature of the Republican Party, now MAGA, the cult that has replaced the Republican Party.
It’s really hard for me to imagine this guy Brian J. Cole Jr., A BLACK MAN WITH A HOODY ON AT NIGHT walking past several cop cars that night and hundreds of surveillance cameras and being allowed to continue on his merry way.
