Trump’s Iran “deal” is already falling apart—and the consequences could be nuclear. On today’s AMPED UP, and David Shuster break down how Trump’s threats of annihilation against Iran have backfired spectacularly.

Iran is now charging a $2 billion toll on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, effectively boosting its own economy by 15% while American consumers foot the bill. That is, as Cliff said on the show, “just a wholly absurd outcome from a wholly absurd President and a wholly unnecessary attack.”

Then Dr. Rebecca Lubot, author of Keeping a Finger on the Button: Presidential Continuity in the Nuclear Age, joins Cliff and David to explain why Trump’s nuclear brinkmanship has crossed a threshold no modern leader of a nuclear state—not even Putin!—has crossed.

What he’s done is so ridiculous that China, Russia, and France are all now changing their nuclear doctrines in response to the irrational ravings of the Queens-bred, brainf*k. A man who somehow finds a way to do something more knuckleheaded each day than he did the last.

She also explained the context for the 25th Amendment, which was after JFK’s assassination. But the real context is that you could end up with a President who is lacking some marbles—perhaps the whole set like the current jack-in-the-box—and this amendment was of course put in place for specifically this purpose. But, then again, did anyone image we could make Minnie Mouse the Speaker of the House?

Which with him is quite the accomplishment.

Tonight’s show was one of those conversations I wish didn’t need to happen—but absolutely has to. I was joined by Malcolm Nance, and if you’ve watched him over the years, you already know why I wanted him here. Malcolm doesn’t traffic in speculation or hysteria. He deals in facts, history, and consequences. And when it comes to Donald Trump’s renewed fixation on Greenland, consequences are exactly what we’re talking about.

What Malcolm laid out, calmly and methodically, is why this isn’t just another Trump fever dream or campaign-season bluster. Greenland isn’t some abstract chessboard square. It’s part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Denmark is a NATO ally. That matters—because once you follow the logic through, you’re no longer talking about Trump posturing. You’re talking about the real possibility of the United States provoking a direct crisis with NATO itself.

That’s the trap. And Malcolm was crystal clear about it.

We walked through NATO’s structure, particularly Article 4—something far too few Americans understand. Article 4 isn’t about automatic war; it’s about consultation when a member believes its security is threatened. If the U.S. even appears to be moving toward coercion or military action against Greenland, Denmark has both the right and the obligation to trigger that process. At that point, this stops being “Trump vs. Denmark” and becomes the U.S. versus the alliance system that has underpinned global stability for nearly 80 years.

Malcolm also brought firsthand knowledge that you simply can’t fake. He’s been to Greenland. He’s spoken to Danish officials. He understands the geography, the logistics, and the absurdity of the idea that Greenland could be seized or pressured without massive blowback. This isn’t a place you just roll into. The environment alone defeats arrogance. The politics defeat fantasy. And the international consequences defeat anyone who thinks bullying works at this scale.

What impressed me most—and what I think viewers really felt—was Malcolm’s restraint. He didn’t exaggerate. He didn’t sensationalize. He explained why, in strategic terms, the smartest move for the United States is not escalation, not bravado, not “strength theater,” but restraint. Stability. Diplomacy. Not playing the game at all.

That’s the core truth here: Trump’s approach doesn’t project strength. It advertises recklessness. And in a world already strained by real wars, real authoritarian aggression, and real nuclear risk, manufacturing a crisis with allies is the opposite of leadership.

This episode of Amped Up with Cliff Schecter was raw, urgent, and politically clarifying. The outrageous, murderous actions by Donald Trump, The Pentagon, and the masked ghouls of ICE obviously created this atmosphere. The hosts and guest, while retaining their sense of humor, just weren’t having it anymore.

As usual, Cliff was joined by co-host David Shuster, and Streamyard-ing in was guest Walter Rhine. All three walked viewers through the human, moral, and political fallout of ICE violence in Minnesota and Defense Department violence in Caracas—and what Democrats must do right now in response.

1. Minnesota in Crisis: Fear Is the Point

Walter opened by describing why he kept his kids home from school—not abstract fear, potential violence unfolding in Minnesota after the horrific shooting. With ICE activity escalating near his community and masked agents operating without accountability, parents have been forced to make these decisions.

This isn’t paranoia. It’s the consequence of federal agents:

• refusing to identify themselves

• operating without visible oversight

• escalating confrontations amid protests

Walter framed it as a decade-long escalation of racialized intimidation, beginning the moment Donald Trump entered national politics.

2. Shoot-First America: Minneapolis Not an Isolated Case

Cliff drew a straight moral line between:

• the killing of Renee Nicole Good by ICE in Minneapolis

• the bombing that killed Rosa Elena González, an elderly woman in Venezuela

The connective tissue is dehumanization—a Trumpian political culture of Might Makes Right that treats certain lives as disposable, often even celebrates violence. Cliff argued the same logic fuels:

• War Crimes in Venezuela

• ICE brutality

• school shootings enabled by gun extremism

In Cliff’s words: If we can’t say the word “fuck” on TV, but we’re fine with kids and grandmothers being slaughtered, our moral compass is broken.

3. White Supremacy as System, Not Exception

Walter articulated a central thesis of the conversation:

This isn’t imported fascism. This is America’s original sin, fully institutionalized, and encouraged to fly its freak flag proudly.

Key points:

• White supremacist ideology was never fully dismantled, it was rebranded

• The KKK has never been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. government, which is shocking

• ICE is a magnet for radicalized actors, including January 6 extremists

Right now the problem is leadership, or lack thereof, from Kristi Noem to J. D. Vance. Classless, shameless, unprofessional cretins. They attack victims like they’re a Kristi Noem puppy or Usha Vance family member, instead of pausing for an investigation.

That reaction, David argued, is the tell.

4. Media Failure and the Both-Sides Lie

A recurring theme: corporate media’s abdication of all responsibility to inform their audience of objective truths, be they scientific, historical, or a shooting any person can see violates every rule of law enforcement (and humanity).

Examples called out:

• “Some people say…” reporting when video evidence exists

• treating objective facts as partisan opinion

• laundering propaganda through false balance

I’m not going to sugarcoat this one. This was one of those shows that leaves you angry, shaken, and more convinced than ever that what’s happening in this country isn’t theoretical anymore—it’s real, it’s violent, and it’s accelerating.

David Shuster and I opened the show with breaking news out of Minneapolis that stopped both of us cold: ICE agents shot and killed a woman sitting in her car. DHS immediately went into damage-control propaganda mode, claiming she posed a threat. The video tells a different story. Witnesses tell a different story. And the law—actual Supreme Court precedent—tells a different story. There was no imminent threat. What we watched looks like an execution, not law enforcement.

David brought his trademark clarity and discipline to the conversation, walking through what the law actually says about use of lethal force and why the official narrative doesn’t hold up. We kept coming back to a point that matters deeply: constitutional rights don’t disappear because someone is undocumented. Due process applies to all of us—or it applies to none of us.

That’s when joined us, and the conversation leveled up fast. Qasim didn’t hedge. He laid out exactly how qualified immunity has been twisted into a shield for state violence, why this doctrine has no grounding in the Constitution, and how it’s now being weaponized by a Supreme Court captured by MAGA ideology.

Qasim also did something incredibly important: he gave people practical, life-saving information. What to say if ICE approaches you. What not to say. When to ask if you’re being detained. When to demand a lawyer—and why silence is often your strongest protection. This wasn’t abstract legal theory; this was real-world guidance for surviving an increasingly lawless system.

From there, the conversation widened—because it has to. We connected what’s happening in Minneapolis to what just happened in Venezuela. Illegal force abroad. Illegal force at home. Civilian deaths treated as collateral damage. And a political class—especially Democratic leadership—that still seems terrified to say the obvious words: illegal, unconstitutional, criminal.

David pushed hard on the global consequences: What happens when the U.S. behaves like a rogue state? What happens when international law becomes optional? What happens when “sphere of influence” logic gets normalized again? These aren’t academic questions—they’re how you end up with chaos, civil war, and global instability.

And through it all, Qasim kept returning to the core truth: this isn’t left versus right. It’s billionaire oligarchs and their enablers versus everyone else. It’s extraction, repression, and fear—used deliberately to keep people divided while power concentrates at the top.

This was a hard show. But it was also a necessary one. Because pretending this is normal is how we lose everything.

This includes beatings, sexual abuse, sleep deprivation, starvation, contaminated water, and prolonged isolation. The reporting documents how these men were used as political props, paraded in front of cameras, and deliberately sent to a prison already condemned by international observers for violating basic human rights.

As we watched the report together, we paused at key moments to underscore what cannot be glossed over. This was not “tough border enforcement.”

This was the deliberate outsourcing of human rights violations—paid for with U.S. taxpayer dollars. We discussed how the administration invoked extraordinary wartime powers to bypass courts, ignored judicial orders, and treated asylum seekers as expendable tools meant to send a message of fear across Latin America.

Just as disturbing as the torture itself was the second story unfolding around it, which is censorship. This 60 Minutes segment was fully reported, legally vetted, and approved—then abruptly pulled.

We talked in real time about what it means when billionaires who fund the dunderheaded liars now inhabiting our government also control the institutions to which they’ve given an integrity vasectomy, power is longer held accountable.

When journalism is a liability and not a public trust, the Fourth Estate collapses into compliance. And when government treats policy like it’s a movie, replete with photo-ops, silly slogans, and fake storylines, democracy’s in trouble.

Throughout the broadcast, we contextualized what viewers were seeing, including how tattoos were falsely used as “evidence” of gang affiliation, how ICE’s own data undermined official narratives, and how international law—including the Geneva Conventions—was violated in plain sight.

I also mocked the inebriated neural networks of the trolls who puttered into our chat to insult us with misspellings of three-letter words, historical illiteracy, and a not-minor-at-all challenge when it came to correctly conjugating verbs. I mean, a guy’s gotta have some fun on a broadcast like this, no?

We also connected this story to the broader pattern of media consolidation in the United States, oligarchic influence, and how both of these have helped pave a path toward the slow but steady normalization of cruelty as policy int he U.S.

This episode was not about partisanship. It was about our democracy, and the creepy, sadistic sods undermining it. About lines being crossed—legally, morally, and historically.

We were blunt because the facts demand nothing less than bluntness. When our government disappears people, pays foreign fascist regimes to place them in concentration camps, and tortures them—and then suppresses the evidence—silence becomes complicity.

We urge viewers not just to watch this footage, but to preserve it, share it, and force it into the public record—because once stories like this vanish, accountability vanishes along with them.

I had a blast digging into the news with David Shuster, per usual, and the brilliant, funny, charismatic trial-lawyer-turned-MSNBC-host-turned-independent-media sensation, Katie Phang.

Katie, unsurprisingly, was on her game from the jump.

Our conversation moved fast, covered a lot of ground, and it sure as hell never lost its edge—exactly what happens when you put legal expertise, political savvy and truth-telling—i.e. some folks who aren’t afraid to call bullshit when they see it—together.

We spent the bulk of Amped Up digging into the latest releases connected to the Epstein files, not chasing conspiracy—which the Trump Administration may have killed as it’s seemingly brought most of them to life—but focusing on accountability, transparency, and a disturbing pattern of institutional failure that surrounds them.

Katie brought precision, legal clarity, and a refusal to let process be used as a shield against responsibility. She was careful, factual, and unflinching about what the law requires—and what the Department of Justice is currently failing to deliver. Yet she was able to fit this in between humor, even cursing more than me (!), and just a really great conversation in general.

What caught my attention in what Katie shared wasn’t just what’s in the documents, but how they’ve been released. Rolling disclosures. Sloppy redactions. No clear explanations.

In other words, par for the course with the clown car that just won’t empty. This group of no-nothing numskulls are every bit as amateur when they try to hide their alleged crimes as they are when they commit them.

Katie broke down why that matters legally, not just politically, which was key to our show, as David and I are most certainly not lawyers. We talked honestly about how stories get softened, delayed, or quietly sidelined—and why independent media is often where the real accountability work happens now. That wasn’t a knock on journalism as a craft. It was a sober assessment of how institutional pressure shapes what the public ultimately sees.

We also zoomed out. This wasn’t just about Epstein. It was about due process, separation of powers, and the dangerous normalization of executive overreach. Katie was very clear that defending due process does not mean defending criminals, as Republican mouth-breathing partisans like to growl.

It means defending the Constitution. When that principle gets twisted into a partisan talking point, we’re already in deep trouble.

Toward the end of the show, we talked about media itself. After briefly going into the tragedy of 60 Minutes, with Bari Weiss, the new “editor” at CBS News making it Trump TV. One of her first acts? Suppressing a segment on how without due process we sent innocent men to a torture prison (CECOT) in El Salvador. It is horrific, and it was predicted.

Katie then talked more about the media in general, including why she left MSNBC, what she misses, and what she’s gained in her life by building something independent where she can live her values. She was honest about the tradeoff of leaving security behind to speak more freely.

Luckily for us, she made the choice she did, because her authentic voice right now is exactly what the moment demands.

This was a serious conversation grounded in the simple concept of right vs wrong. Not left vs right. Accountability vs impunity. Transparency vs obfuscation. And damn it, we made some jokes and had a helluva time while doing it. That’s what I call time well spent.

And that’s why this episode matters—and why I’m grateful to Katie Phang for bringing her expertise, her integrity, and her clarity to Amped Up this holiday season.

Some shows are about breaking news. Others are about stepping back and asking how the hell we got here. This one was firmly in the second category.

We started, as we so often do lately, with Donald Trump saying or doing something that would’ve been disqualifying in any other era. In this case, floating the absurd idea of renaming The Kennedy Center after himself. As someone who’s spent much of his life reading about and admiring the Kennedy legacy, this hit a f*king nerve.

Not just because it was offensive—oh it is—but because it captured something bigger: the way this dilapidated, purple-blotched nitwit treats history, culture, and institutions all as props for his own deeply-damaged ego.

We pivoted into Trump’s latest “speech”—more a chaotic, breathe-hole barfing than coherent address, It was a stream of disconnected talking points, grievances, and numerical nonsense. Applying the word “thought” to that drivel would itself be a thought crime.

Drug prices reduced by “600 percent.” Trillions in investment that don’t exist. Shouting as if the mere decibel-level of his voice lent it authority. It’s not just dishonesty anymore; it’s deterioration. What’s most alarming isn’t that Trump says these things—it’s that so few people around him are either willing or able to stop him from embarrassing the office, the country, pretty much our entire way of life.

Greg Olear thankfully joined us, as I’m always grateful to have his perspective. Greg’s one of those rare scribes who writes like a poet but analyzes like a management consultant. He helped frame the really bad reboot of It we all witnessed as something deeper than a daily scandal.

We talked about how narcissism, impulsivity, and sociopathy don’t mellow with age—they intensify. Add power, media enablers, a cult audience, and the elephantiasis of his dementia, and you get the House of Cards insanity we see play out daily.

A big part of the discussion centered on the Epstein files and the slow, drip-by-drip release of material tied to some powerful people. We weren’t speculating—we were asking basic questions. Why release some photos? Why redact others? Who benefits from delay, confusion, or selective disclosure?

And perhaps most importantly: if the full truth doesn’t come out officially, how likely is it that whistleblowers eventually force it into the open?

That led us straight into a media reckoning. We talked about the difference between reporters who clearly see the problem, and those who feel compelled to normalize it. When the job becomes translating incoherent jabroni-blabber into “serious political analysis,” democracy’s in serious sh*t.

This isn’t just about Fox News—it’s about an oligarch-owned, monopoly-media ecosystem that sanitizes extremism and extreme-dumb because conflict drives clicks and accountability threatens access.

We’ve seen it in the way Fox and other right-wing sources put the spin on the recent MAGA rebellion in the House on healthcare, something I got to talk about on The Daily Whatever Show on Friday as we joked about how bad the news had been last week.

We also spent time on something that doesn’t get enough attention: culture. Greg made a sharp point about the decline of the humanities and how imagination, critical thinking, and storytelling matter more than ever. You can’t recognize authoritarian nonsense if you’ve never trained your brain to question narrative propaganda.

Which brought us, fittingly, to Rob Reiner and the enduring relevance of films like A Few Good Men and The American President. Those monologues weren’t just great writing—they were warnings. So I’m proud of this article I wrote about just that topic.

We closed by looking into the future. Not one where we don’t need roads—sadly that one seems further off than predicted. But the 2026 elections. Democratic leadership that can feel tired and reactive. And the growing hunger—especially among younger voters—for politicians who sound like they believe what they’re saying.

Whether that energy translates into real change remains an open question. But it certainly can if we make enough noise, make our demands clear, and we do some heavy lifting on the messaging—it is the digital age, we can reach as far as our ideas will take us.

From there, David laid out what’s actually happening with Venezuela — and why the administration’s talking points don’t hold up under even minimal scrutiny. This isn’t about drug interdiction. It isn’t about safety. It’s about oil, power, and a president who’s always looking for a pressure release valve when the walls start closing in.
