THE HOME OFFICE IN WAHOO, NEBRASKA (The Daily Whatever Press)—With nine days left before the midterms, the good news has piled up so high that seven slots couldn’t hold it anymore, so we’re doing nine.

David Letterman’s Top Ten lists used to arrive “from the home office in Wahoo, Nebraska,” and I’m borrowing the office because Nebraska is suddenly one of the places Republicans are sweating. Letterman got 10. We get nine, one for every day left on the calendar, and every one of them was built, gold-plated brick by gold-plated brick, by Donald Trump.

I’m a bona fide GenXer, which means optimism is not my factory setting. I don’t trust good news until it’s been counted, certified, and left on my porch in a box.

But even I have to admit the numbers this week are fucking gorgeous.

No. 9: Trump’s approval rating has reached spelunking depth

Reuters/Ipsos has him at 31%, his lowest ever. CNN has him at 32%, also his lowest ever. NYT/Siena, with 3,494 likely voters, has him at 36%. Gallup had him at 44% at this point in 2018, the year Democrats picked up 41 House seats, so he’s running eight to 13 points behind the version of himself that already lost the House once. Yowza.

On cost of living, AP-NORC puts his approval at 17%. This is the man who promised voters he’d end inflation starting on day one, and he now polls like the last donut in the break room at 4 p.m. if that donut’s glaze was flaking off and losing its damn mind at rallies, fantasizing about all the other hot, sexy man donuts.

No. 8: The generic ballot is showing off

NYT/Siena has Democrats ahead 52% to 41% on the generic congressional ballot. CNN has it 49% to 39%. The Strength In Numbers/Verasight poll has Democrats up 12 among likely voters, with Republicans stuck at 41% among registered voters, the lowest the GOP has ever scored in that poll.

In 2018, Democrats won the national House vote by about eight and a half points, and Nancy Pelosi got her gavel back. We are polling ahead of that, and I would like everyone to stay calm about it while I scream into a throw pillow.

Trump’s ratings on immigration, border security, and deportations also hit new lows in the Verasight poll, and Republicans no longer lead Democrats on immigration or deportations at all. He spent 10 years building his entire political brand on one issue, and he’s lost it. Oh, honey. I’d feel bad, except that schadenfreude is just so much more fun.

Share

No. 7: Democrats are the ones who can’t sit still

Pew Research Center found that 63% of Democratic supporters say they’re extremely motivated to vote, against 46% of Republican supporters. Half of Democrats have given the election “a lot” of thought; only 36% of Republicans can say the same.

In October 2022, Republicans led on both measures. Four years ago, the enthusiasm gap was theirs. Now it’s wearing our jersey and asking where to park.

No. 6: Cook’s House map is bleeding blue

SO WHAT IS GOING ON??

Let’s get this straight. Democrats are crushing, but we still might not get what we’re praying for out of these midterms—after all the insanity, all the worry, all the fighting to set things right?

Arrrgh, yes. On the one hand, this week:

• Structural indicators hit new lows for Trump, and new highs for Democrats.

• Democrats have a huge money advantage in the race for state legislative chambers, possibly as much as four times more than Republicans.

• The gubernatorial races continue to look good in most key races.

• The Cook Political Report now counts 220 US House seats as at least “Lean” Democratic, with 17 more toss-ups.

What does that mean? It means that as of today, the “chalk” result not only gives Democrats a majority but puts them on the doorstep of a win big enough to withstand some factional infighting.

So why the hedging hesitation in the headline? Because on the other hand, the Senate situation is resting on a knife’s edge.

Midterm HQ Weekly Dashboard: Week of October 19, 2026

The Structural Picture

The numbers almost speak for themselves. A record low net approval rating for President Trump. A record high generic ballot reading for Democrats for this cycle, according to Nate Silver. Charlie Cook keeps moving more races in Democrats’ direction every darn week—in fact, I’ve had to move my Midterm HQ production back by a day in order to catch all the weekly movement.

You just must see it to believe it—which I’ll get into below. Take the ultimate ride with me below the paywall…

Just two weeks left to act!

by David Shuster

Over the last ten years, there has been a tradition in MAGA economics of measuring prosperity not by a worker’s earnings, grocery prices, or even what remains in somebody’s pocket after paying for gas, housing, and health care, but by what Donald Trump says. Under this system, most of the public may be growing poorer, the cost of living may be climbing, and the family budget may be coming apart at the seams. But none of that matters. Trump declares economic greatness and anybody who declares otherwise is a traitor and/or fake news.

Now, less than two weeks until the midterm elections, Trump and his administration deputies are leaning into the top issue for voters—the economy—and lying with an enthusiasm and intensity unknown to humankind.

At the White House Rose Garden, where Dementia Don announced a women’s health care task force chaired by RFK Jr. (oh the ironies), Trump also declared that consumer prices are, “coming way down. I’m seeing. Down, down, down.”

One almost has to admire the simplicity. There is no need for elaborate economic theory, no tiresome consultation with the Bureau of Labor Statistics, no investigation of the typical family finances. The President has seen it. Down, down, down. The case is closed.

Unfortunately for Trump and the GOP, the business of prices is conducted in the vulgar world of arithmetic, where Trumpian delusions have never been recognized as a unit of measurement.

According to Trump’s own Bureau of Labor Statistics, inflation was 3.0% when Joe Biden left office and Trump took over in January 2025. Now, inflation stands at 3.7%.

That does not mean every price is rising at the same rate, nor does it mean that the price level itself has jumped by that amount. It means that the pace of inflation has increased. The distinction is elementary, but elementary distinctions have a way of becoming inconvenient for the Trump buffoonery squad.

Trump’s defenders could reasonably argue that inflation is affected by many forces, that some prices fall while others rise, and that no administration controls every fluctuation in the market. All true.

But this is precisely why a President who makes wild claims about falling prices should be prepared to show his or her work. Otherwise, we are left with an administration demanding credit for the economy while treating unwelcome data as subversive threats.

At the same White House Rose Garden event, Trump said that China’s President Xi Jinping was at the White House a week earlier, when the visit had occurred about a month before. Does this confusion signify Trump has dementia? Add it to the list. But whether you believe or not that Trump’s brain is rotting, this incident does beg a more ordinary question: why must the public so often be asked to reconcile Trump’s pronouncements with the plain record of events and basic facts?

Welcome to the Blue Letter! Here’s 5 stories I’m watching worth your attention today

Plus a few headlines to keep an eye on this week. Let me know what you think by responding to this email or joining us for a live show soon. Have a great start to your week!

1. The U.S. is sharing intelligence with Ukraine again. What happened?

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the U.S. has resumed intelligence-sharing after a “pause” that deprived Ukraine of information it uses to defend innocent civilians from the barbaric Russian missile attacks targeting them. The Trump administration claimed intelligence-sharing had continued. But Zelensky’s a man who could’ve escaped Ukraine when Russia first attacked, yet said his fate would be the same as that of his people. Trump’s a bone-spur-brained coward, convicted on roughly the same number of felony counts as Meyer Lansky, Al Capone and John Gotti combined. So I think I’m gonna take Zelensky’s word for it on this one.

Volodymyr Zelensky

Donald Trump

Share

Why I Care: When Trump decides not to share intel about attacks with Ukraine, as Russia and Ukraine expert Olga Lautman said on our weekly show World War Next last week, “Ukrainian civilians lose their 15-minute-advance warning. And they die.” This is not just a diplomatic back-and-forth. It’s murder. There is no other appropriate word for purposely allowing civilians to die you could save with a phone call.

So I want to know what actually happened here, who “paused” the sharing of vital, life-saving information, and whether Kyiv can count on the U.S. going forward. My guess is Zelenskyy can count on Trump’s word about as much as any creditor, wife, business partner, or diet could rely on Trump’s continued loyalty.

2. Republicans are moving their money out of NC. What does this tell you?

The leading Republican Senate super PAC has pulled its TV advertising in North Carolina to shift resources toward states such as Iowa and Kansas. Democrat Roy Cooper is making affordability and his Medicaid expansion as governor key campaign planks. But let’s put that aside for a sec, and be real, folks. As I so often say from my time in this business: I’ll always put my faith in good candidates. Roy Cooper’s run five statewide races (three for attorney general, two for governor) in North Carolina. At least three were when it was more red than its current purplish tint. He won ‘em all.

Cooper is a great candidate. And Trump, who may not technically be on the ballot, is a narcissistic jackwad who’s refused to exit the spotlight. This choice, to largely make the midterms a referendum on him, is a gift. Trump’s approval rating has recently fallen just below rat feces. It now around where you’d expect to find approval for vomiting on yourself at a business meeting with your bosses, then bending over to clean it up and pooping yourself.

Why I Care: That old Watergate adage—follow the money, my friends. Campaigns can tell us whatever story they want about their confidence level, but where parties and PACs spend money is tells you the truth. So buh bye whomever’s running against Cooper. I haven’t even bothered to learn your name because I knew you’d lose. But be strong! I’m sure there are other grifts in your future! Maybe try selling a biblical cure for cancer via email list. Mike Huckabee did that and it only seems to have enhanced his career in GOP politics.

3. Trump is hemorrhaging Mormon Voters—Why it’s a BFD

Mormons were once as reliable a Republican constituency as existed. They strongly supported George W. Bush. Loved Mitt Romney—one of their own—when he was the GOP’s presidential nominee in 2012. Oh how times change. Numbers from the Deseret News and the Hinckley Institute of Politics show that Latter-day Saints’ self-identification as Republican has dropped from roughly 70–75% in 2012 to the mid-to-high 50s. That’s what we call free fall, friends. A twenty to 30 percent crash out.

Pew Research and YouGov jointly found a steady multi-year decline in loyalty of Mormons to the GOP, with increasing numbers of Mormons becoming independents or even or shifting toward the Democratic party. Somewhere, the late former Democratic Senate Majority Leader—and Mormon—Harry Reid is smiling.

Subscribe: Keep Us Punching!

Why I Care: Will this make Utah a Democratic state? No. But Trump’s fallen to a 43% approval rating among Utah’s Mormon population, putting once safe GOP congressional seats in play. Additionally, an independent is running against a GOP incumbent in Idaho, which is 25% Mormon, and that race is competitive.

This is part of the reason why.

Mormons are 6% of Nevada and Arizona’s population, respectively. They could be the difference in Democrats' winning these crucial swing states. They’re also about 5% of Montana and Alaska, which have crucial Senate and House races this year (Democrat Mary Peltola is leading Alaska’s U.S. Senate race, while the rating for Democrat Sam Forstag in Montana’s statewide House seat was just changed from “lean Republican” to “toss up”). Alaska’s been trending Democratic. Mormons are a part of this equation.

4. Iowa Democrats aren’t trying to win every rural voter. They’re trying to lose by less.

Iowa Democrats are making a real push to compete in rural parts of the state, with candidatesl including U.S. Senate candidate Josh Turek and Iowa governor candidate, Rob Sand, focusing on local campaigning and economic issues. It is a smart move.

Why I Care: Politics isn’t always about persuading voters to switch sides. Sometimes it’s convincing enough folks to stay home less often or give a Democratic candidate a second look. Democrats don’t need to—and won’t—turn every rural county blue to improve their chances statewide. They just need to compete. Go into these areas. Talk to folks about what’s important to them.

We’ve seen Trump increase his vote share among groups where it was once thought to be impossible: Latinos; young, college-educated white men, etc. The dumbest thing Dems have done in 2 decades was shuttering former DNC Chair Howard Dean’s 50 state strategy. It had Democrats talking to voters year-round—in difficult regions of oft difficult states. The only way to defang the Fox, Sinclair, and talk radio lies is to show up—and show rural voters you’re a 3-dimensional human. Get to know them.

So good work, Iowa! This is how you win not just this year, but in many future cycles.

5. Trump’s golf-course plans have a problem: a judge.

Trump has announced that East Potomac Golf Course will close on November 15 for 15 months of redevelopment. A judge has already halted redevelopment until at least October 26. The announcement doesn’t establish that the administration has resumed work in violation of the court’s order, but the legal dispute over the public course goes on, because can Donald Trump ever just walk away from a needless fight and not be an asshole? Rhetorical, folks.

Why I Care: This is about more than golf. It’s about public land, who gets to make decisions about it, and stopping Trump and other Republicans from selling off beautiful public spaces to the highest, scammy, crypto-bidder. It’s important that when this dingbat’s plans run into courts, some courts still stand tall.

Also, not for nothing, but he sucks at golf and cheats. Sportswriter Rick Reilly penned a whole book on it!

A Few More Headlines For You This Afternoon!

California and the Trump Admin fight over mail ballots:

The Justice Department is challenging California’s handling of roughly 20,000 ballots it alleges may be tied to noncitizens. California officials dispute the administration’s claims, because as you know, the Trump Administration lies like it’s a bodily reflex. This is part of Trump’s cheat at elections like he cheats at golf plan. Really, he cheats at everything, because he may be the first human being to actually suck at everything.

Trump’s approval numbers give Dems a lot to talk about:

A Washington Post–ABC News–Ipsos poll reportedly puts his approval rating at 33%, which should make him feel good as other recent polls have had him at 29% and 32%. This is all within the margin of error. The key is two-thirds of us realize how shitty a president he is (should be 100% of humans and a more-than-minor percent of all mammals, but still, this is historically low…).

The economy: still the political problem killing MAGA:

Voters care about prices, household budgets, and whether they feel better off than a year ago. That leaves Republicans with a difficult question heading into the midterms: how do you lie your ass off about an economic record that consists of taking a growing, thriving economy and tariff-ing, debt-ing, deporting, firing, corrupting, Strait of Hormuz-ing, and inflation-ing it to death?

Good luck on that one, chuds!

Worth Another Look

Some stories we did this week that are definitely worth making sure you’ve seen/read!

Trippi: Republicans Need to Win Back 26 of 31 Points. Here’s the Problem: Longtime political pro, Joe Trippi, joined us to talk about some of the incredible numbers, races, fundraising, and more that he’s seeing. Some of it is pretty shocking. Shocking in a good way:

Trump: “I Could Say the Stupidest Things”: Actor, comedian, streamer, Hal Sparks had me on to discuss Trump’s insanity. The amber-tinted abomination told his fans he “could say the stupidest things” and they’d clap. And then…they clapped! Hal & I delved into not just what is infecting Trump’s perforated dome, but the minds of those still sticking with this mentally-congealed wastoid.

This Week’s Entertainment!

We’re doing our usual assortment of shows this week, though I apologize some changing schedules have had us on the fly lately. As of this moment, we’re looking at:

• The Epstein Update w/ Kait Justice & Cliff Schecter. With our friend Kait well, she’s going through a health issue—she’ll be ok!—but won’t be able to do the show this week (or we’ll have to plan it at the last moment for end of week).

CONNERSVILLE, INDIANA (The Daily Whatever Press) — Asked at a candidate forum what unpopular decision she’d make if elected to the Fayette County Council, Jaime West gave the only answer in the history of candidate forums anyone has ever remembered.

“Firing all Republicans.”

She did not stop there, because she is Jaime West and she had no notes. Like, literally, she had no notes. “I wouldn’t let them. I mean, I don’t even talk to them. I don’t like them.” Then, being fair: “There are good Republicans out there.” The MAGA ones, though, she called “racist” and “not very intelligent.” And when the moderator asked for her closing message to the voters of District 4, in a county where she says people have threatened her life, she thought it over and said, “We have guns too.”

Don’t believe me? Watch it for yourself:

The forum ran Friday, October 9, on LocalTV3, co-sponsored by the Connersville News-Examiner, whose managing editor, Amy Graham-McCarty, moderated with the composure of a woman who has moderated a great many things in Fayette County and never once this. West’s segment starts about thirty-three minutes in. By Tuesday, the clip was on Mediaite, the New York Post, Breitbart, the Blaze, TMZ, and, naturally, Libs of TikTok, which posted it with the caption “This is NOT a skit.” By midweek, BuzzFeed counted 8.2 million people engaging with it. The whole county has about 23,000.

Who she is

Jaime West is a mother of three grown kids. She owns Queen Bee’s Cleaning LLC. She delivers groceries and packages around Fayette County for a living, and she said so on camera like it was the most normal credential in the world, because it is. She opened by saying she had no prepared statement and would speak “from my heart,” and then she did exactly that for several minutes, and the heart in question turned out to have opinions about ICE “coming into our communities, stealing people’s jobs.” Yes, mama!

She came to clean house, and instead she won the hearts of every fed-up red state Democrat in the country. Hell, I live in Indiana, and if it didn’t mean voter fraud (which isn’t prevalent and always seems to be a Trump voter, anyways), I would drive a couple hours south and vote for this hero myself.

Share

Her Republican opponent, Gary Keener Jr., did not attend. He had “prior business commitments,” so he sent a statement for the moderator to read aloud, and it said he had “never been more excited and committed to work diligently and tirelessly” to spend tax dollars efficiently and broaden the tax base. Graham-McCarty read it. I assume she read it well. Nobody has posted a clip of it, because nobody has ever posted a clip of a tax-base statement, anywhere, ever.

So that is the matchup in District 4: one candidate who showed up with nothing but herself, and one candidate who sent a fax from 1991.

What the outrage machine thought it was doing

Fayette County went for Trump by about 77 percent in 2024. There is no public polling on this race, because there is never public polling on a county council race, because until last Friday nobody outside Fayette County knew it had a council. The right-wing content industry found the clip and did what it does: it tried to turn a woman who cleans houses in Connersville into a national exhibit of Democratic derangement. Libs of TikTok asked whether she was intoxicated. Blaze Media’s Steve Baker decided she was “clearly drunk or high.” Zero Hedge got involved, which is how you know a story has reached the part of the internet where everyone is a doctor.

This data is presented as part of a partnership with Polymarket

Nothing has been confirmed. Not one of the people diagnosing her was in the room, and I am not going to be the forty-thousandth guy on the internet with a medical opinion about a stranger in a thirty-second clip. What I will say is that the people clutching their pearls hardest over “We have guns too” are the same people who spent the last decade posting family portraits where everyone, including the toddler, is holding an AR-15. A Hoosier Democrat says one sentence about the Second Amendment, and suddenly the Come and Take It crowd needs a fainting couch. SHUDDER

Can Republicans Buy Their Way Out of This?

Midterm HQ: The GOP is cutting its House losses and spending like mad to hold a couple of Senate races. Will it work? [5 min read]

Toplines for the Week

The past week brought the whole midterm fight into focus: it’s Republican money vs Democrats’ math.

The structural picture—the math—tells the same consistent story it has for months: it should be a Democratic blowout. As you can see in the dashboard below, the environment is at Toxic Avenger levels for the GOP.

But Republicans have a plan.

It involves cutting dead weight, keeping things close in a handful of races, and crossing their fingers for a late effect that we’ve seen before. Will it happen? Let’s unpack it.

Midterm HQ Weekly Dashboard: Week of October 12, 2026

The Structural Picture

The week’s structural indicators tell a familiar tale: disastrous Trump net approval with all voters (particularly independents), a huge generic ballot lead for Democrats, miserable consumer sentiment.

But this week, those big drivers became a backdrop for the more important story: Republicans accepting reality and launching their endgame. Here’s what that looks like…

Over the weekend, Donald Trump performed one of his most treacherous acts to date. He plunged a dagger into the back of Ukraine, a nation struggling against Russia’s invasion. And Trump did it with the braggadocio of a demented lunatic.

Last Friday, Donald Trump announced a “massive” deal to purchase diesel fuel from Russia. The adjective was Trump’s own. The consequences, however, belong to all of us. American money will flow to Vladimir Putin, a dictator who has demonstrated repeatedly what he intends to do with the funds: buy weapons, sustain his war machine, and continue to terrorize Ukrainian civilians.

The Atlantic described the transaction as the most outrageous and heartless Trump betrayal yet, adding that it offers the President, his family, and friends corruption opportunities on a multibillion-dollar scale.

Trump would have us all believe that Russia is not an adversary of the United States, not an enemy of our European allies, and not a menace to the security of NATO. Never mind that Russia has interfered in American elections, is assisting Iran in its conflict with the United States, and keeps threatening NATO countries including Poland and Lithuania. Meanwhile, Russia maintains a strategic partnership with China, a country whose ambitions over Taiwan pose a direct threat to the U.S.

Vladimir Putin is not innocent.

He is a ruthless and tyrannical dictator whose government has been rightfully subjected to punishing sanctions intended to deny it access to Western capital. Those sanctions have made Putin’s war against Ukraine more difficult to finance. Enter Donald Trump, arriving on Friday afternoon with what amounts to a financial transfusion for Russia.

This data is presented as part of a partnership with Polymarket

So, what is the United States getting in return? A reduction in the cost of diesel? A grateful nod from the Kremlin? Perhaps a few kind words from Moscow’s propaganda machine?

Whatever the consideration, it is difficult to imagine a bargain more disadvantageous to American interests.

There is, to begin with, the matter of the law.

My friends, just three weeks from today, to borrow a phrase, is endgame. Just 21 days from now, Americans decide whether Donald Trump gets two more years with that collection of crumpled styrofoam known as our current Congress. Or do we write a new end to our story? One of redemption, restitution and renaissance for American democracy.

As we said in our title and subtitle, Trump literally cheered on a man-ish creature who was beating a female protester at the rally in Youngstown, OH last night. For good measure, as Trump wouldn’t want to just be run-of-the-mill MAGA gross, gaudy, and gauche, he mocked the victim as “fat” and a “guy” as she was the one—not her assailants—being escorted out of the Reich-ish rally by the police.

We have Pete Hegseth planning livestreamed executions. The dehumanizing of Democrats by our Morlock-president as a “threat from within.” We bomb countries because we feel like it, double tap surviving sailors trying to tread water. Ice violently assaults our neighbors—and often us—for the crime of wanting a better life. And at a campaign rally the Russian-owned president cheered the Russian roulette he’s playing with our republic—as he encourages government not by ballot, but billy club. Or bullet.

It would seem to signal Trump’s further descent into madness, as Democrats continue to improve their chances of a blowout by just letting Trump livestream his mouth. BUT… I’m not going to tell you how it ends on November 3. Nobody knows yet, and anyone who says they do is selling something.

But what I can tell you is what Blue Amp Media has: David Shuster who’s covered hundreds of elections. Me. I’ve worked on hundreds of them. And I can tell you how BAM will spend every one of the next 21 days: covering the 2026 election with dedication & urgency—like it matters more than anything—it does.

In 21 days, it must be blackjack for America.

So we’re doing something we only do a few times a year. A full year of Blue Amp Media is 30 percent off: $42 instead of $60. As 42 was the number proudly worn by Jackie Robinson, who changed our country in ways we can’t allow Republicans to turn back—it couldn’t seem more right.
